ArtBots 2008 - the international robot talent show - will come to Science Gallery in Dublin for a three-day festival of robotic arts and art making robots on September 19-21, 2008.
ArtBots 2008 forms part of Dublinâ€™s fringe festival and will showcase a range of creative arts and robotics activity. In addition to meeting the robots ArtBots gives you a chance to meet their creators and learn more about the creative collision between art and science.
Artbots opens on Friday 19th September and is free and open to the public from 12pm-11pm on Friday - all welcome and no pre-booking required. The exhibition continues on Saturday and closes on Sunday evening at 8pm.

- Robots are entering our homes for domestic service, they are harvesting our fruit, making our cars, milking our cows, performing surgery, and nursing us. Yet we are surprisingly unprepared for the consequences. This talk, by broadcaster and academic Noel Sharkey, aims to provoke wider discussion of the new developments and their ethical implications.
ArtBots 2008 features 15 works by 16 artists from 9 countries, as well as performances, workshops, lectures, and an awards ceremony. Participating works were selected from an international open call for "robotic art and art-making robots". Find out more about the artists and robots on artbots.org

"der Zermesser" is a large autonomous, room-filling object which feels its way around its surroundings by gradually extending and retracting its shape in reaction to any obstacle it encounters.

"gossamer-1" generates abstract paintings in a Jackson Pollock style by picking up and analyzing surrounding sound to produce unique â€˜actionâ€™ paintings.

4. IC Hexapod Matt Denton (2007)
iC Hexapod is a six legged robot that can spot peopleâ€™s faces in a crowd, follow them around and interact with them. Its head contains a lens that zooms in and takes a photo of the person it looks at and uploads the image onto its own website (www.hexapodrobot.com).

5. Mechanical Dolls

Mechanical dolls explore cultural identity and sexuality. Through electronic modifications cute and cuddly dolls are transformed into one of a kind robotic creatures.

Rechnender Raum (Calculating Space) is an inverted machine where the core of the machine, with all its computing elements, is shifted outwards on the surface, while the "display" which indicates the results of the tasks is displaced into the center of the system. The solution is hidden from the viewer while the process of calculation can be viewed from any angle.
