DRONE SURVIVAL GUIDE
Ruben Pater
Equipped to resist
This guide contains the silhouettes of the most common drone species used today and in the near future, indicating their nationality and whether they are used for surveillance only or for deadly force. All drones are drawn to scale to indicate their size, from the smallest consumer drones, measuring less than one metre, up to the Global Hawk, measuring almost 40 metres in length. Printed on foil so it can be used to conceal one’s heat signature, the guide contains tactics for hiding from drones and interfering with their sensors. The Drone Survival Guide has been translated into multiple languages as a form of not-for-profit civil initiative, without government or commercial funding or support. As a design for resisting violence from above (literally), the guide is agitation and propaganda as much as it is a useful tool, and has been appropriated in popular culture — as in M.I.A.’s music video for Double Bubble Trouble (2014).
