WALKING LIPS

Walter Van Beirendonck, 2013

Gender and violence

This sculpture, designed to be worn, was produced by Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck for the Amnesty International campaign End FGM. As part of the campaign 42,000 signatures were collected online and in person from people across Europe demanding action to end FGM. A small group of artists and designers were invited to use 8,000 of these signatures each, captured on paper rose petals, to create their own responses to the issue. This creation calls for the need to speak out and end the silence on FGM. The works produced travelled across Europe on the Art for Action tour, gathering audiences of politicians, artists, activists, people from affected communities and beyond. The final leg of the Art for Action tour, showed the creative projects to European and national decision makers, demanding action.
