Mississippi Swan — Chris Tonkin & Rick Snow (AU & US)

This mostly-autonomous, partially-interactive generative sound and visual installation generates a new album of eight to thirteen songs with accompanying album artwork every 15 to 25 minutes — generating up to seventy unique EPs, or around 700 unique songs, every day. Visitors can press a button on the installation to trigger the creation of a unique album at any moment.

BIO

Mississippi Swan is a fictional producer/songwriter emerging from collaboration between Chris Tonkin, from Perth, Australia, and Rick Snow from New Orleans, USA. Mississippi Swan’s name derives from the major river systems flowing through each city.

Rick Snow and Chris Tonkin met while studying music together at the University of California, San Diego. In 2016, they formed Mississippi Swan, beginning with Daybew!, first shown in Perth, Western Australia. Daybew!represents the first utterance of Mississippi Swan, an ongoing collaboration between Rick and Chris with future projects and albums in the pipeline.

Based in New Orleans, Rick Snow’s recent work involves sculptural and interactive sound objects combining live instruments, interactive video and lighting with sculptural elements. Rick is professor of practice in the music department at Tulane University, New Orleans, where he teaches music technology and composition.

Based in Perth, Chris Tonkin creates new electroacoustic performance works and generative computer music, also maintaining a keen interest in the history, repertoire and performance of popular and experimental electronic music. Chris is head of composition and electronic music at the Conservatorium of Music at the University of Western Australia.
