INFLAMMATORY FAT

Title of Study: Inflammatory and Metabolism Research Studies

Department of Surgery

Introduction

The Department of Surgery in Trinity College Dublin is involved in many different research projects exploring the role of inflammation and metabolism in health and disease. The research group is continuously looking for healthy volunteers to provide blood samples, which can be used as “healthy control” age matched samples in research projects. By agreeing to provide a blood sample you will be helping us understand the role of the inflammatory response and energy metabolism in health and how it is altered in disease. Involvement in this project would require a once-off donation of a small blood sample.

Procedures

Individuals over the age of 50 and do not currently have a diagnosis of cancer or irritable bowel syndrome are eligible to participate. Approximately 20mls of blood will be taken from your arm by a trained professional and this is a once-off donation.

Benefits

By participating in this study as a healthy subject, you will allow researchers in the Department of Surgery to identify and distinguish any inflammatory and energy metabolism changes that occur in the blood of patients with certain diseases such as cancer and irritable bowel syndrome, which we are currently studying. Your sample will form the healthy baseline to which other samples will be compared.

Risks

Drawing blood from a vein can cause discomfort at the site of puncture; possible bruising and swelling around the puncture site; rarely an infection; and, uncommonly, faintness from the procedure.

Exclusion from participation: You cannot participate in this study if any of the following are true:

Under the age of 50

Current diagnosis of cancer

Current diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Confidentiality

Your identity will remain confidential. Your name will not be published and will not be disclosed to anyone outside the study group.

Compensation

This study is covered by standard institutional indemnity insurance. Nothing in this document restricts or curtails your rights.

Voluntary Participation: If you decide to volunteer to participate in this study, you may withdraw at any time. If you decide not to participate, or if you withdraw, you will not be penalised and will not give up any benefits that you had before entering the study.

Stopping the study

You understand that the investigators may withdraw your participation in the study at any time without your consent.

Permission

This study has been approved by Trinity College Dublin’s Faculty of Heath Sciences Research Ethics Committee.

Further information

You can get more information or answers to your questions about the study, your participation in the study, and your rights, from Dr. Joanne Lysaght who can be telephoned at 01-8964259 or Dr. Jacintha O’Sullivan who can be telephoned at 01-8962149. If the study team learns of important new information that might affect your desire to remain in the study, you will be informed at once.

Inflammatory Fat

Is there a link between visceral fat and cancer in men over the age of 50? Donate a blood sample to an ongoing investigation with immune cells into whether fat packed around the internal organs has a tie to cancer.

  • Testing Time: 10 minutes
  • Limited orders: Men over 50 only
  • Waist circumference measure and blood sample required to partake in this test
