ANTICIPATING VANITY
By Theresa Reimann-Dubbers (DE)
This exhibit explores a future scenario in which space hotels are visited by those few who can afford to do so. Critically, their interest lies in the resulting publicity, not in exploring the unknown. Although finding themselves in an entirely new environment with unusual conditions, the same earthly (specifically, western) beauty ideals apply. Unfamiliar situations, such as the aesthetically problematic effect of zero gravity on long hair, must be prevented. A body adornment, onto which long hair is styled and fastened, serves this purpose. It ensures that the wearer's hair continually 'falls' exactly as intended and preserves the desirable bounce of the hair. As the wearer moves, so do the plates holding the hair, simulating a gravity-induced gentle wave of the hair.
BIO
Theresa Reimann-Dubbers is a German artist currently studying at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work is motivated by the desire to expose that which Marshall McLuhan calls the “environment” of technologies. By engaging critically with new technologies, she examines their “anti-environment”, embedding this in objects/installations to challenge the given environment.
Theresa Reimann-Dubbers' work has been shown at transmediale and CTM Vorspiel, Ars Electronica and NIPS.
