WIND WORKS
By Meg Rodger (GB)
Wind Works explores Meg’s relationship with the elemental qualities of the wind.
She lives and work on a small island in the Outer Hebrides at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. To dwell in such a place, where the forces and cycles of nature are extreme, is both inspiring and humbling to Meg. Nature here is dictator, rhythm-setter and provider. In such an environment, technology can assist greatly, but in extreme conditions it can cease to function. Developing an intuitive and practical relationship with the environment becomes vital, and the best solutions are often the most simple. As a result, working in isolation has forced Meg to be self-reliant and inventive.
At 57° north, life is defined by the mercy of the wind. Wind Works is a collaboration between the wind, a simple apparatus and the artist. Every drawing is unique and collates wind data comparable to statistical scatter plots. It demonstrates the use of simple technology to generate quasi-scientific and intriguingly alternative artistic results.
Each wind drawing is named after the BBC shipping forecast for the day on which it was created.
BIO
Meg is an artist living and working on the small island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. She works creatively with natural phenomena, taking inspiration from the complexity, strength and beauty of the oceans and wild lands.
Appreciating the ancestry, knowledge and skills of the people who dwell in these places is part of her creative process. Her work investigates the perspective that humans are not central but merely part of these naturally occurring systems and cycles that are complex, integrated and vast.
