So, how’s this going to work?
Hack the Brain Dublin is an immersive, creative weekend in Science Gallery Dublin that aims to get artists, designers, neuroscientists, experimental psychologists, engineers and developers working together in transdisciplinary teams to develop ideas into prototype artworks, objects, inventions or interfaces that use or harness brain signals and brain-computer interface (BCI) technology.
Working against the backdrop of Science Gallery Dublin’s summer exhibition SOUND CHECK, eleven teams will spend the weekend hacking, building and experimenting, before showcasing their protypes in Sunday’s open pitching session for our judges and members of the public.
If you have an interest in brainwaves, neural interfaces or new inventions, and want to learn more by getting stuck in, this is the event for you! Don’t worry if your current expertise doesn’t stretch to brainwaves — we'll provide you with online tutorial material in advance, and we'll have BCI and OpenViBE drop-in workshops on the afternoon of Friday, 9th June. There will also be artistic, scientific and technical mentors and helpers on hand all weekend to help you. By signing up to join a team, you'll get the opportunity to work intensely with new people from a range of backgrounds to explore, collaborate, converse, and create together over the course of the weekend. And we'll feed you!
The hackathon is an opportunity for all participants to come together in a creative, social space to experiment with innovative and novel analysis techniques and applications of brainwave data.

Fantastic! But unfortunately our OPEN CALL FOR IDEAS is now closed. From the submissions, our judges have selected some awesome projects to be developed during the hackathon. Anyone who has registered to participate can join one of the following teams (links and more info coming soon....)

Glad you're interested - Click here to sign up to join a team (it's free!). You can pick a team to join, or we'll set you up with one during the “matchmaking session” at the Hack The Brain kick-off event on Friday, 9th June, when each project idea will be presented on stage. We've had a huge number of registrations, so if there are no spots left, please join the waiting list and we will contact you immediately if a spot opens up for you.
I’m really interested, but I don't want to join a team. Can I come along and join the audience?
Yes! Hack The Brain is open to members of the public, too. On Tuesday, 16th May, we had a public pre-event to get the neurons firing and the creative juices flowing — this was also streamed live online. The opening night (Friday, 9th June), featuring presentations from some of our special guests, will be open to the public - register here. This will also be streamed online on www.facebook.com/scigallerydub. We'll have some artists talks open to the public on Saturday 10th of June at 6pm - tickets here. Finally, the hackathon will culminate with public pitches by the teams at the end of the weekend on Sunday evening, followed by the awards ceremony - sign up here to claim a free ticket.
You mentioned developers — can you be more specific?
Most of the brain-computer interfaces can be used with OpenViBE, a free open-source software that works on Linux and Windows. We predict that there'll be plenty of opportunities for neuroscientists, data analysts, engineers, and programmers familiar with analyses of EEG/MEG data or other complex time-series data. If you've got programming experience in Matlab or Python, or data visualisation/mapping expertise, we'll definitely find a team for you too.
Hack The Brain Dublin open to artists working in any medium — from audiovisual artists to musicians, composers, dancers and sculptors.
Will there be help or guidance for our team during the weekend?
We'll have experts in BCI hardware and software on site, as well as artists and designers available to mentor teams throughout the weekend if you need support. There is also a GitHub repository where you can access a collection of projects developed during previous Hack the Brain Hackathons, including open source code.
On Friday afternoon, before the kick-off event, g.tec will deliver a BCI workshop to give participants the opportunity to get familiar with the hardware and software available, and they will show some possible non-clinical applications and uses of their products. Also on Friday afternoon, from 15.00-17.00, Brain Products will have a drop-in hardware demo station in the Studios. Brain Products recommend to users of their equipment to use OpenViBE and LSL Apps for the Hackathon, with the caveat that these are suitable for Windows machines:

What hardware/equipment/software will be available?
- 1-2 Neuroelectrics Enobio kindly provided by Starlab Barcelona SLU, who will be in attendance throughout the hackathon.
- Headsets/systems will be kindly provided by g.tec who will be in attendance throughout the hackathon. They will bring the following systems:
- 1x g.USBamp 16 channels
- 1x g.Nautilus 8 channels
- 1x g.Nautilus 16 channels
- 1x g.Nautilus 32 channels
- 1x g.Nautilus 64 channels
- Participants interested in using one of those systems should register on br41n.io to find out if it is still available ahead of the hackathon.
- Open BCI.
- VR headsets, e.g. Oculus Rift, Samsung gear VR and matching phone.
- Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D printer, soldering tools, etc.

The HTB repository aims at facilitating the way you make things work. Therefore, the HTB repository has a bunch of code that you can use to easily develop your application.
Furthermore, you can have access in the HTB repository to the full or partial code and/or patches for the specific projects that were developed during the past HTB Hackathons.
In this way, you can experiment with those projects yourself whenever and wherever you want.

The winning project with the biggest market potential will qualify for the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas/products/prototypes to win a 1-3 month incubation program in San Francisco with DART 17. DART 17 will help the teams to test their prototype and collect feedback from technology companies, industry experts, and investors in Silicon Valley. Learn more here!
