HOW IS IRISH RESEARCH CONTRIBUTING TO BIO ALTERNATIVES?
AgriChemWhey is an international research project where scientists collaborate with the agriculture industry to create a more sustainable dairy industry in Europe. One of the products from this industry is whey permeate, a bi-product of milk production processes, which can be used to create bioplastic. By turning it into polylactic acid, it can be used in compostable plastic packaging and fertilizer. This process could reinvent our socio-economic relationship with the cow, creating new products and new revenue streams. This piece has been developed in conjunction with AMBER scientists who will investigate the development of new materials and processes within the AgriChemWhey project. Could a move to bioplastics also help create a more sustainable dairy industry?
ABOUT
AgriChemWhey is an international research project where scientists collaborate with the agriculture industry, including Glanbia, to create a more sustainable dairy industry in Europe. The project will serve as a model for sustainable growth in dairy output in the EU and globally. The project has received funding from the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. This piece has been supported by AMBER, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research, within its Education and Public Engagement Programme. The piece has been developed in conjunction with AMBER scientists who will investigate the development of new materials and processes within the AgriChemWhey project.
