SHOULD PLASTIC BOTTLES COME WITH A WARNING LABEL?

Warning labels on cigarette packs alert us to the damage smoking can do to our health. What if we took a similar approach to highlight the damage single-use plastic can do to our environment? As a society, we drink a lot of bottled water, if we added warnings that highlight the devastating impact they can have on our environment, would it encourage those who can do without plastic bottles to become more conscious consumers? Rather than marketing bottled water, the images show the devastating impact plastic has on the environment and marine life. Is this an effective way to spark a change of behaviour? What would stop you from buying a bottle of water?

ABOUT

The People’s Plastic workgroup was established during the #OneLess Design Fellowship in 2018. The fellowship bought together emerging designers, innovators, urbanists and architects to tackle persistent barriers of plastic bottle waste. The team consists of multi-disciplinary designers, makers and consultants working from research through to product design. Tajwar Aziz is currently doing her MA in Expanded Design Practice at Goldsmiths, Federico Trucchia is a senior designer at Arrival, Halszka Staniewicz is a digital designer at Patient, and Libby Landenberg is a service designer at Engine.
