TOUCHOLOGY

INTERACTIVE WHITE NOISE MACHINE, 2016
CAROLYN TAM, ELENA FALOMO, JOE MULLER, AND YANG GAO (UK)

Touchology is an exploratory investigation into a new wave of music where instruments and interfaces are designed around gestural controls. The artists regard randomise-able noise as a rising form of music, and wanted to turn it into a new form of expression. The white noise machine is controlled using a series of capacitive proximity sensors which electrical charge to work with specific materials. This allows it to translate subtle hand movements into digital controls for the antennae. The random movement of the antennae creates a white noise soundscape, which the user can affect with proximity.

BIO

Touchology was developed by Carolyn, Elena, Joe, and Yang. The artists met while completing their Masters in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. Operating as a multidisciplinary team, and blurring the boundaries between fields of science, technology and the arts, they use multimedia and craft as key components of their work in trying to bring innovative design to a wider audience.
