With the support of Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme, Science Gallery Dublin has also commissioned several new works for IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, all created by Irish and international artists working in collaboration with Irish research institutes: AMBER, iCRAG, CÚRAM, and CONNECT. These artworks look at a diverse range of apocalyptic theories, from extinction-level gamma-ray bursts to the theory of panspermia — the idea that life on earth originated from microscopic life on asteroids that collided with the planet. More crucially, these works explore some of the ways that researchers in Ireland are proposing that we mitigate or tackle these challenges.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, the new free exhibition at Science Gallery Dublin, launched on 13th October 2017 and runs until 11th February 2018. The exhibition explores why the disastrous can be devilishly entertaining, and whether there’s any truth to the dismal predictions made by pop culture portrayals of the end of the world.
