IRON, Fe
ANTONY GORMLEY
‘Meme’ is a concept devised by the scientist Richard Dawkins as a cultural analogue of the gene, an idea transmitted from generation to generation. Meme CXV is one in a series of miniature human figures, with abstract rectangular forms constructed from the most abundant element on this planet – iron. Gormley’s pixellated miniature iron man might be said to possess memes to do with industry, strength, masculinity, blood and war. As well as making up most of the earth’s core and being the 4th most abundant element in its crust, iron is an essential part of our lives; from its biological role in transporting oxygen in our blood, to its industrial role in constructing boats, bridges, and railways.
