Graffiti Analysis is an extensive ongoing study into the motion of graffiti. It has two elements: part one involves custom software that visualises the often unseen creation of a tag. Part two is the construction of Graffiti Analysis: Sculptures, a series of physical sculptures that Roth makes from motion-tracked graffiti data.

In the Graffiti Analysis software, motion data is recorded, analysed and archived in a free and open database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles. Graffiti Analysis: Sculptures is a series of physical sculptures made from the captured motion tracked graffiti data. Customised software creates a 3D physical sculpture that serves as a data visualisation of the original tag. The 3D sculpture represents the gestural motion frozen in time, while casting a 2D shadow of the original form.

The project aims to build the world’s largest archive of graffiti motion and bring together two seemingly disparate communities that share an interest in hacking systems, whether found in code or in the city.
