HOMESTAY
FIONA HALLINAN (IE)
EXHIBIT & CITYWIDE
FRI 22.06.12 - SAT 08.09.12
Drawing on existing models such as Couchsurfing.org, Airbnb.com
and the New Life Copenhagen project, Homestay aims to set up a pilot
network of hosts within Dublin, who can provide accommodation
in their homes for a nominal charge to artists and practitioners taking
part in HACK THE CITY. Cultural events and festivals tend to spend
a significant part of their budget on travel and accommodation.
Homestay provides an alternative solution which enables this
money to be redirected towards the actual creation and production
of work, as opposed to secondary accommodation costs.
Through personal meetings, dedicated documentation and the
organisation of events, the hosting of participants will act as a reciprocal
exchange for both host and visitor: a beneficial experience for both.
Throughout HACK THE CITY, Homestay will have a desk based at
HACKLAB, whereby members of the public can learn about the project
and sign up to become a future host. In testing this process within
HACK THE CITY, the goal is to explore the creation of a format for future
festivals to accommodate participants in the homes of Dublin residents.
BIO: Fiona Hallinan is a Dublin-based artist. Through installation,
unlikely gatherings, adaptations of public space, audio, photography,
and autonomous education projects she explores themes of collective
memory, playful and anachronistic uses of technology, and the value or
non-value of certain knowledges. Hallinan creates site-specific audio
tours exploring hidden narratives of place and installations, presenting
collated audio work in participatory ways. She works as a freelance project
manager, organising Fraoch Retreats and at MEDIA Desk, the mediator for
EU audiovisual funding in Ireland. She has exhibited at the Kerlin Gallery,
IMMA, Conflux (NYC), SOLAS NUA (DC) and Brown University (RI)
